Pastel bangs and Rococo

Photographs of pastel-colored hair and pink eye makeup makes me think of Fragonard paintings and Vigée Le Brun portraits of Marie Antoinette (obvs). I like the hyper-feminization of pink hues and girly ribbons tied in the hair. It makes me want to pick a bouquet of pink roses from the rose garden I have in my fictional backyard, after enjoying afternoon tea served by my maidservants. Sigh.

Another day at the Cinema

It's Sunday again. Today we're playing Hysteria, Marley, The Whale, Amador, and some silent films. I can't even describe how horribly annoying it is when a group of 4 friends, for example, walk in and all stand around the cash together and one tells me, "Four tickets for Marley," and so I go, "Okay, that's $46.00," and then they go, "Oh, but we're paying separately." Then don't tell me you want 4 tickets! Say, "I'll have one ticket for Marley." Sometimes in response I get, "It's $46.00 for ONE ticket!?" YA. YA it's over forty bucks to see a feature film. Learn some freaking ticket-buying skills, people!

Today I also got the usual comment of, "Why don't you accept credit cards?" (note: the cinema I work at does not accept credit cards and there are two big signs at the cash so people will GET IT. having to answer questions relating to this policy - among other things - has become the bane of my existance). I don't know why we don't accept credit cards, Mister. When I started working here we didn't accept them. My boss decided this long before I was even hired. Some businesses have rules like CASH ONLY so I friggin' don't know WHY we don't accept credit cards. Talk to the owner about his decisions to allow or not the use of plastic.

Thank god tomorrow's Monday.

Don't let go

"Wait For Me Daddy," by Claude P. Dettloff, October 1st, 1940

I recently saw this image and was struck by how much it captured. The long line of male soldiers walking towards a waiting train in British Columbia; the three extended hands of the mother, son, and father, forming some sort of familial bond; the view of the small town landscape and architecture; the women all walking along the side of the men.

I've been lazy

I have been super lazy on the blog front. I better mention a couple major things that have happened since my last post! Okay, first of all, I've graduated university! I am now a woman with a Bachelor's degree in Art History! It's not that big of a deal, really. I mean, I can't really find a job in my field right away, but I'm fine with just working at the Cinema and trying to fill my days with different hobbies. This summer, I'm going to try my hand at quilting, urban gardening, and of course, blogging. Can I just make a living from making crafts, baking pies, reading magazines, and drinking buckets of white wine?

Frida Kahlo is cool

Frida Kahlo is such an interesting artist. What I'm most fascinated about is her use of costume to create identity. I love how these paintings use a traditional Tehuana dress to convey her ideas about femininity, tradition, indigenousness, etc. Researching her relationship to clothes, the way she dressed herself, as well as the way she paints costume into her paintings is such an interesting topic!
Frieda and Diego Rivera, 1931

Memory, 1937

My Dress Hangs There, 1933

What the Water Gave Me, 1938
In the last painting, isn't it eerie how Frida's naked body floats in the water and her empty dress floats beside it?

Thinking about Ireland

Two years ago I spent 12 months living in Ireland, working as an au pair in Dun Laoghaire (just outside Dublin), and became part of an incredible family. It's been hard to adjust to the fact that I won't see those 3 little boys grow up, and if I do return to visit, be prepared to have them not remember me. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what I miss about my year abroad: is it the freedom of being out of school and living anonymously? is it the exciting Irish culture I got to experience? is it the fun I had playing with the kids and their dog and integrating myself into a nice home? I suppose it's a combination of all of those things. But most of all, I miss being the au pair the kids would tell they loved, or would not stop trying to cuddle with as I tucked them into bed. I'm sure I'll have an opportunity like that when I have my own children (hopefully not for a while!) but it's interesting how maternal instincts can be stimulated when caring for children. Looking at these pics make me feel sick with longing!
